Reston, Virginia considered in Money Magazine's "List of Best Places to Live" (Ranked 7 out of 100).
Reston was founded by Robert E. Simon on April 20, 1964 and became the first planned community in America. From the beginning, Reston was all about quality of life and was designed so that residents can live, work, enjoy recreation and experience cultural events all within the bounds of the community.
Simon designed Reston as group of small villages. Each village was laid out around a small retail center that contained the shopping outlets most residents would use daily, such as a grocery store, dry cleaner, video store and neighborhood restaurants. Surrounding the retail center is a range of home styles to support the different interests and needs of the residents. Each village also has a small community center with a swimming pool so the residents could enjoy some outdoor activity without having to travel outside of the village.
The original social center of Reston is the Lake Anne Center which is located on the north side of Lake Anne and was designed to emulate the Italian coastal town of Portofino. Here you will find the Historic Trust Museum, two art galleries, restaurants and the senior citizen's fellowship house. It is a wonderful place to spend a warm afternoon beside the lake.
Today, the social center is the Reston Town Center located off the Reston Parkway. The Reston Town Center is a modern day "downtown" with 50 retails stores, 30 restaurants and a 13 screen multiplex cinema. This acclaimed outdoor venue has a pavilion which hosts special events, concerts, festivals and ice skating throughout the winter. Come here to shop, eat and just sit back and enjoy the afternoon.
Few communities can claim the recreational amenities available in Reston. For starters, there are five lakes, Lake Anne, Lake Thoreau, Lake Audubon, Lake Newport and Lake Fairfax. All offer fishing and boating and Lake Fairfax offers camping and fun at the Water Mine waterpark. The Reston Zoo is a small zoo and wild animal park where you can get “up close and personal” with the animals. And the W&OD bike trail which runs from Rosslyn to Purcellville cuts right through town and provides fantastic opportunities for anyone looking to get some aerobic exercise like cycling, walking, running or rollerblading. There are also many community trails throughout.
Simon wanted Reston to be a place where one could live one’s entire life and every type of home can be found here. There are condominiums and townhouses in the town center for those who want a more urban style of living, condominiums and townhouses in the woods for those looking for something that is more back to nature and single family residences ranging for 1000 square feet up to large estates and active adult communities for those over 55.
Come to Reston and you will know why some many want to call it home and why it became the model for the modern community.
