Northern Virginia Community College has earned the number two spot in a ranking of digital community colleges by the Center for Digital Education. The ranking recognizes technology innovations at community colleges.

NVCC was recognized in the large colleges category with more than 10,000 students. The ranking is based on information provided by institutions for the annual Digital Community Colleges Survey, which examined digital and emerging technologies, such as the use of mobile devices and technological integration into curriculum; strategic planning and data management; and professional developmental, including availability of technology tools and training for faculty and students
